Real Posts by Real People (RPxRP) were formed in The Venue, New Cross in October 2006 by childhood best friends Adriano Fence and Stuart Lamp whilst watching Cosby, Mills, Nash and Young - the seven-legged CSN&Y;tribute band put together by Bill Cosby and featuring Heather Mills, Kate Nash and Kirstie Young.
Fence (guitar /backing vocals) and Lamp (bass / backing vocals) wrote and recorded demos which became the Double Post EP (AgeStamp Records STMP003).
They recruited Ben Dover (drum machine) and Mike Hunt (percussion) to join the band and provide a fuller sound, which culminated in a headline tour of clubs in Yorkshire (Tingley), where Ben’s uncle lived.
On the drive up the M1 they wrote and recorded the ‘Yes That’s My Name’ single, and on the way home the next day they applied the finishing touches to their debut album, the now long deleted ‘First Post:Real Names’.
While touring the album, the snare button on Ben’s drum machine stopped working. To avoid ruining the bands authentic tweecore sound, the Swedish MTV presenter Inge Burlynger (Adriano’s girlfriend) joined on second drum machine (snare, handclaps), a move which freed up Dover to press the Hi-Hat (Closed) button and contribute backing vocals.
Despite the new five-piece line up recording the outstanding indie chart number one hit single ‘That’ll Do’, and its mediocre-but-yet-high-charting follow-up ‘Stupendous’, Burlynger’s arrival prompted the beginning of the end for the band.
The sophomore LP ‘Second Post:Still Real Names’ was greeted with mixed reviews, Uncut calling it ‘the worst record of the year’, while the NME, who had never supported the band, declared it ‘the worst record of all-time’.
Critics pointed to the fact that the lack of a lead vocalist was becoming more annoying with each song, and that Inge Burlynger’s name wasn’t as stupid as the rest of the rhythm section.
In a desperate attempt to get the music press onside, Carrie Oncamping was hired to play tambourine and Steve Racing joined as an additional guitarist. But the final album, released in December 2007, ‘Christmas Post’ was to be the last thing the band released.
RPxRP split in January this year. They won’t really be missed.
